Cultural diversity & inclusion
Waverley is home to a diverse community that includes people from all around the world who speak different languages and adhere to a variety of beliefs. It is also a popular destination for local, national and international visitors.
42% of our residents were born overseas, with the most common countries of origin being the United Kingdom, South Africa and New Zealand, and 21% speak a language other than English. Waverley has the largest Jewish population of any Local Government Area in NSW. The area also boasts a mix of age groups, with a strong presence of young professionals, families and retirees.
Waverley Council is building a welcoming, cohesive and resilient community where people of all cultural backgrounds can belong and participate in social, cultural, economic and civic life. Council has identified five areas to focus on:
- Leadership and planning
- Connected and welcoming
- No place for racism
- Inclusion and equity
- Unlocking opportunities
Our commitment is demonstrated through our Cultural Diversity Strategy, which was informed through community input and collaboration with local stakeholders, peak bodies, and representatives from local organisations, including Council’s Multicultural Advisory Committee.
