Public gardening

Public gardening

Council supports public gardening as a valuable activity that offers a wealth of benefits for our community and environment. Public gardens not only beautify our neighbourhoods but also foster a sense of community and wellbeing, by helping residents connect with nature and each other.

By engaging in public gardening, rehabilitating an unloved site or regenerating a natural area, residents can help cool their neighbourhood, improve air quality, reduce stormwater runoff and enhance biodiversity, all while enjoying fresh produce and learning sustainable practices.

Individuals or groups can work in small areas of a park, on a street verge, in a reserve, at a disused allotment or around a cul-de-sac.

Before starting a new garden located in a public space in Waverley, talk to an existing group. Waverley's shared garden teams are always looking for new members to join and help maintain their patches!

Council is committed to ensuring that public gardening contributes to and enhances sustainable and connected public spaces. If you are interested in creating a new garden in a public space, you will need to submit an Expression of Interest form to connected@waverley.nsw.gov.au. Feedback on your proposal can take up to 6 weeks, with the Public Garden Advisory Panel meeting monthly.
