In the early ‘70’s, one of the most revered photojournalists of World War II, W. Eugene Smith is living as a recluse of sorts, struggling with alcoholism and depression. On a secret commission, he is sent by the editor of Life magazine to Minamata, a coastal town in south-western Japan. Chisso Corporation, a Japanese chemical company, had been dumping their waste into the bay, leading to mercury poisoning of the residents of Minamata. Armed with his camera, Smith overcomes obstacles and violent reprisals from this powerful company, to document the images that made a huge impact. Based on a true story.
