Our beaches

""

A short distance from Sydney’s city centre are Bondi, Bronte and Tamarama beaches. Each year, these beaches welcome millions of local and international visitors wanting to enjoy Australia’s stunning coastal environment.

Waverley Council is responsible for the management of these beaches and provides a professional lifeguard service to patrol them year-round. Each day, our lifeguards will assess the conditions in the water and set up red and yellow flags to designate an area for swimming at each beach. If there are no flags, no swimming is recommended.

All three beaches are linked by a coastal walk that offers stunning view as it winds its way along the coastline.

In 2017, Bondi Beach became the first Australian beach to offer a free Wi-Fi service. Now, free Wi-Fi is available at Bronte Beach, Tamarama Beach, Bondi Junction (Spring Street and Oxford Street Mall), Waverley Library and Waverley Park, to help residents and visitors stay connected.

Council is working on a number of initiatives to improve inclusion and access at Bondi Beach, including an accessible beach mat and wheelchairs that are available at certain times during the week.

Alcohol and smoking are prohibited at Waverley’s parks and beaches. Find out more about alcohol free zones. Pease leave the beach in the same way you found it by taking all rubbish with you!

Bondi Beach

""

The world-famous Bondi Beach is roughly one kilometre in length and attracts up to 50,000 beachgoers on a busy summer’s day. The beach is enjoyed by local swimmers, tourists, bodysurfers and board riders of all ages and walks of life.

The southern end of the beach is popular with experienced board riders, while the northern end is more suitable for swimmers and learner surfers. Families also prefer the northern end because of the children’s wading pool and rock pool.

The promenade and the beachfront are used by walkers, joggers and people out to enjoy our year-round sunshine.

Bondi Beach is surrounded by park facilities, including a playground, outdoor gym, toilets, food and beverage facilities and barbecue facilities. For a full list of facilities, visit Bondi Beach Park.

Bondi has a number of board riding clubs, including:

Tamarama Beach

""

For a quieter beach experience, some prefer to head around the corner to Tamarama Beach. While this beach may not be as busy as Bondi Beach, it’s just as beautiful. However, it’s not always safe to swim at because of unpredictable surf conditions and strong currents. For this reason, it is usually favoured by experienced surfers.

If you do plan to visit for a swim, make sure you swim between the flags and check in with our lifeguards about the surf conditions on the day.

Tamarama Beach is a popular destination for families and friends, with food and beverage facilities, toilets, a play equipment, barbecue facilities and picnic shelters at the neighbouring park. For a full list of facilities, visit Tamarama Park.

Bronte Beach

""

Bronte Beach boasts incredible coastal views from its clifftops, beautiful parkland and Bronte Gully. For those who prefer a more leisurely swim, there is an ocean pool at the southern end of the beach.

Bronte Beach supports a wide range of recreational activities, with a children’s play area, barbecue facilities, food and beverage facilities and toilets at the adjoining park. For a full list of facilities, visit Bronte Park.
