Marks Park

East end of Fletcher St, Tamarama (Mackenzies Point)

Marks Park

Marks Park is a headland and cliff-top park that offers panoramic views of the coastline and ocean, with Bondi to the north and Coogee to the south. It has a playground, toilet facilities, seating and shaded areas.

Designated a Military Reserve in 1885, the land was leased by Waverley Council from the State Government in 1929 and named after the local Minister of Parliament in recognition of his efforts in securing the lease. In the 1950s and again in the 1980s, regrading work was undertaken to shape the headland park into the flat, grassy area and mounded landscape we see today.

In 2021 The Bondi Memorial: Rise at Marks Park was dedicated to all the victims and survivors targeted during a spate of homophobic and transphobic violence from the 1970s to the 1990s in Sydney and NSW. For more information see www.bondimemorial.com.au.

Cliff collapse

Following extreme coastal weather and natural erosion in April 2024, a cliff collapse occurred below Marks Park on the Bondi coastal walk, taking some of the walkway with it.

Geotechnical Engineers have since inspected the site and determined the walkway cannot be reopened until cliff stabilisation works are undertaken and the walkway repaired.

Council are engaging specialist contractors to undertake this work which will take several months to complete, meaning the walkway will not be reopened until 2025.

We ask for the community’s patience as we undertake this dangerous and complicated work along a highly exposed and difficult to access area of our coastline.
