Staging an event in a public space

Staging an event in public

Council takes great pride in delivering and hosting a variety of major events that contribute to Waverley’s vibrant and diverse cultural life, while meeting the community’s environmental and social sustainability expectations.

Council also facilitates the hire of outdoor spaces in the Local Government Area. If you're looking to host a public, private, or commercial event in Waverley, you'll find a variety of locations to suit your needs. Whether it's one of Waverley’s iconic beaches, scenic parks and reserves or commercial centres, there's bound to be a venue that's just right for your event.

To stage an event in a public space, you will need a permit. Permits are required for events with 100+ people, or events that require the installation of structures including marquees, tables and chairs. In addition to the permit, fees are payable to host such an event in a public space.

If the invited guests do not exceed 99 people and you are not bringing in any equipment, you are still required to apply for a permit to use the outdoor space, however there will not be a fee.

Waverley has a range of parks, reserves and open spaces of various sizes, capacities, frequencies of use and popularity. If you are unsure if you need a permit, it is best to contact Council, who can determine the scale and capacity allowed based on your chosen location.

How to apply for a permit

  • Determine whether your proposed event is low, medium or high impact. To do this, please refer to our Events Policy.
  • For low to medium impact events such as birthday parties, carnivals, charity events and swims, complete a low to medium impact event application form. For high impact events, complete the high impact event application form. Be sure to check the high impact events schedule before you submit your application.
  • Council will let you know that your application form has been received and may request additional information if required. Please feel free to contact us should you wish to know the status of your approval.
  • If the application is approved, you will be sent an invoice followed by a permit for use of the requested outdoor space.

Processing times for applications

  • For low to medium impact events, allow 4-6 weeks from receipt of application.
  • For high impact events, allow up to 6 months from receipt of application.

Fees and charges

Depending on the nature of the event, the number of people who will be involved and its impact on the community, a fee will be payable. Refer to the Pricing Policy Fees & Charges.
