Who is eligible for a Residential Parking Permit?

Residents who live in a residential property within the boundaries of a residential parking zone and meet the application criteria may be eligible for a permit. Permits cannot be issued to non-residents, businesses, commercial properties, organisations or employees in the area.

Permits can only be issued to vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of 4.5 tonnes or less and length less than 7.5 metres. Permits cannot be issued to trucks, heavy vehicles, buses, trams, tractors, trailers, boat trailers, caravans & unregistered vehicles.
For more information visit the Resident Parking Permits page.

What happens if my address isn't on your Residential Parking Permit database?

If you can produce a residential property lease that shows that you do not have access to an off-street space, noted on the database, a permit can be issued. Permits will not be issued where the applicant has made off street parking unavailable due to change of use (ie. using for storage) or by granting usage to a third party. In other circumstances a Temporary Permit may be provided whilst we investigate the situation.

Will I get a reminder notice when my permit is about to expire?

Residents will receive a renewal notice for their Residential Parking Permit a few weeks before the current permit expires. Please note that the onus is on the applicant to ensure that they are legally parked with a valid parking permit. The renewal notice is a courtesy only.

Why do I have to show my car registration papers?

The Resident Parking Scheme only applies to registered motor vehicles which are under four and a half tonnes Gross Vehicle Mass. We are unable to issue permits to trailers, boat trailers or caravans.

To issue a permit, we need to know the type of vehicle and evidence that it is currently registered in your name and address and its registration (plate) number.

Is it possible to get a parking permit for my truck?

Residential Permits can only be issued to vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of 4.5 tonnes or less and length less than 7.5 metres. Beach Permits can only be issued to vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of 4.5 tonnes or less and length less than 6 metres. Permits cannot be issued to trucks, heavy vehicles, buses, trams, tractors, trailers, boat trailers, caravans & unregistered vehicles.

Can I use my green slip or car insurance papers instead of my registration papers?

No. Your green slip/car insurance papers don’t show us that your car is currently registered in your name.

What if I've lost my registration papers?

You can purchase new registration papers from Service NSW.

Alternatively, you can log into your MyServiceNSW website account via the web link and submit a screenshot of your Registration Details that show the vehicle owner’s name and address.

Is there a maximum number of parking permits per house?

Residential and Visitor Parking Permits

The number of permits a household may be entitled to is limited by the number of off-street parking spaces available i.e. garage, carport, driveway, etc.

A maximum of 3 residential or visitor permits may be held by a household at any time, as per the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) Permit Parking Guidelines. Non-strata properties and registered boarding houses are entitled to only 1 permit per unit.

Daily Visitor Permits and Tradesperson permits may be applied for in addition to the residential permit allocation.

Beach Parking Permits

All motorists can apply for a beach permit but only Waverley residents and ratepayers are eligible for the discount. There is no limit on the number of beach parking permits available to individuals or households.

Permits can only be issued to vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of less than 4.5 tonnes and cannot be issued to trucks, trailers, boat trailers, caravans or any vehicle with a length greater than 6 metres. Unregistered vehicles are not eligible for a permit

What if four people share a house and all have a car, can they all have a parking permit?

No. The total number of permits that is available to any residence is three permits (conditions apply as per above). In addition, the number of off-street parking spaces reduces the number of permits per household that can be issued.

How do I get the resident parking scheme introduced in my street/ area?

A written request must be submitted to Council at info@waverley.nsw.gov.au including a petition signed by residents of the impacted street or streets (a petition template can be found in our Petitions Policy here).

Council Officers will then conduct a survey of residents in the proposed streets and prepare a report for the Waverley Traffic Committee if the majority of residents agree to the implementation of the scheme.
