Weeds
Weeds can be a nuisance, but in some cases they represent a hazard that is so serious their presence on public or private land must be reported to Council. There are over 300 weeds in New South Wales, over 100 of which are a concern in the Waverley Local Government Area (see full list).
Council is proactive in weed removal on public land, is part of the Sydney Weeds Network and funds local Bushcare groups to protect key areas.
For residents, the NSW Department of Primary Industries has extensive information on weed management including:
- Advice for home gardeners
- Advice for weed control
- The WeedWise app and directory to help identify if a plant is a weed
In Waverley, the weeds listed below were frequently found in Council weed surveys. Click the link to see imagery of the weed and further information:
- Asthma Weed (Parietaria judaica)
- Bitou bush (Chrysanthemoides monilifera subsp. rotundata)
- Boneseed (Chrysanthemoides monilifera subsp. monilifera)*
- Castor oil plant (Ricinus communis)
- Fountain grass (Cenchrus setaceus)
- Green cestrum (Cestrum parqui)
- Largeleaf Pennywort (Hydrocotyle bonariensis)
- Pampas Lily-of-the-Valley (Salpichroa origanifolia)
- Prickly pears - Opuntias (Opuntia species)
- Privet - Narrow-leaf (Ligustrum sinense)
*mandatory reporting to Council if plant is found on public or private land.
