Urban Ecology
Council manages approximately six hectares of remnant native vegetation across 12 main sites. We are successfully supporting critically endangered Eastern Suburbs Banskia Scrub and other threatened species across these sites.
Through active management of remnant vegetation, extensive ecological restoration and education programs, valuable habitat is being restored for local animals, limited greenspace is being enhanced and coastal and marine ecosystems are being supported.
We will continue to engage with the community to enhance Waverley’s urban ecosystems by providing opportunities to participate in restoration and delivering guidance and support for improving habitats on private land.
We are ensuring that the area’s canopy trees are protected and increasing greening to deliver cooling and improved habitat connectivity for local biodiversity.
- 0% loss of native vegetation from 2022 onwards
- 20% of remnant vegetation is in good condition by 2030 (see graph)
- 29% green cover (canopy and shrub) by 2030
- 1000 habitat gardens established by 2030
