Celebrating our local heroes

22 May 2019
Waverley Council wishes to congratulate the winners of our Waverley Local Hero Awards and thank them for their ongoing contribution to volunteering in Waverley.
The awards, which Council introduced in 2005, acknowledge and reward our volunteers and community leaders.
Our 2019 Local Heroes are:
- Community Strengthening: Peter Quartley (North Bondi precinct committee, Friends of Waverley Library, Surf Life Saving Australia and Bondi Surf Bathers’ Life Saving Club). Pictured (below) top left
- Local Hero – Second Nature Champion: Anne McArthur. Pictured (below) bottom left.
- Award for Community Volunteer: Linda Deutsch (Junction Neighbourhood Centre, City East). Pictured (below) top right.
- Award for Community Life: Catherine Kara (Bondi United Beach Breakers). Pictured (below) bottom right, with friends and family.
- Certificate of Commendation- Community Volunteer: Irina Gilstein (Jewish Care).
The winners of our Best of the Best award- our highest community award- are Audrey and Peter McCallum (pictured top and below) who have dedicated themselves to serving the Waverley community for more than 30 years through their work with Waverley Council Seniors Centre, Waverley Council Justice of the Peace service, citizenship ceremonies, Anzac Day celebrations, Prince of Wales Hospital, Waverley Historical Society, City East and Bronte Public School.
Waverley Mayor, John Wakefield, said the awards were a celebration of community giving.
“Waverley has many unsung heroes,” Mayor Wakefield said.
“They are linked by a spirit of generosity and a desire to help others. Their selflessness makes our community much stronger."
Around 45 Council volunteers who devote their time to services across our organisation including Waverley Library, Justice of the Peace service and Early Education were honoured at the Local Hero Awards celebration held on 22 May at Easts Leagues Club.
