United to End Racism art competition
21 March 2022 | Council News
21 March 2022
Waverley Council is committed to building a welcoming, cohesive and resilient community where people of all cultural backgrounds can belong and participate in Waverley’s social, cultural, economic and civic life. As part of its Cultural Diversity Strategy, Waverley Council is taking a stronger stance against racism by launching the United to End Racism campaign.
United to End Racism campaign objectives:
- promote Waverley as a diverse and inclusive community, which values respect for all and rejects racism
- provide opportunities for people to recognise racism in all its forms and understand its impacts
- encourage everyone to take simple steps to help end racism; and
- include a range of physical landmarks and community activities.
About the Art Competition:
Waverley Council will be offering two panels for 6 months at the Bondi Beach Sea Wall to artists from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
We are seeking proposals for projects that respond to some or all of the following campaign objectives:
● Learn – recognise all forms of racism and understand its impact
● Share – connect with people and have meaningful conversations
● Act – take simple steps to help end racism.
Expressions of interest close at 5pm on Monday 25 April. Click here for more information or to apply.
About the Bondi Beach Sea Wall:
The Bondi Beach Sea Wall has been in operation since the late 1970s and has featured a mix of street and contemporary art with strong social and political messages throughout its history. Over the years, the Bondi Beach Sea Wall has hosted the work of some of the best know street artists across the globe. Featured art works have ranged from collages, stencils, pop art, text works, love notes and memorial portraits.
Finalists Prize:
A $500 prize will go towards funding the material of the two finalists. Each mural will also have a small plaque displaying the artists’ names, a small description of their artwork, and a QR code linked to the campaign.
Eligibility:
- This art competition is open to people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds who have first-hand experiences with issues related to racism
- Artists must reside in the Sydney region.
- Collaborative proposals will be considered.
