Anzac Day 2023
13 April 2023 | Council News
13 April 2023
Waverley Council and the Bondi Junction/Waverley RSL Sub-Branch invite you to Waverley Park Cenotaph on Tuesday 25 April for our community Anzac Day service.
Please join us at 7.45am as we gather to mark the anniversary of the Gallipoli landing on 25 April 1915 and to honour the service and sacrifice of our veterans.
Anzac Day is a time to pay our respects to the servicemen and women who have helped defend our freedoms so that we can live in a free and democratic society. We also acknowledge the Frontier wars and the loss by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples of their lands, their children and culture.
Waverley has many reminders of our military involvement, from the names inscribed on our Great Cenotaph, and at Waverley Cemetery, where more than 500 servicemen are laid to rest.
Waverley’s surf clubs were a popular recruiting ground for the armed services at time when men were trying to feed their families during the Great Depression.
Our Anzac Day service is a community event. All are welcome to attend.
Waverley Council extends its appreciation to Bill Harrigan, Secretary, Bondi Junction/Waverley RSL Sub-Branch for giving the prologue, and Father Anthony Robbie from St Anne’s, Bondi Beach.
We also acknowledge the Catafalque Party and Brass Band of Waverley College, Eastern Suburbs Local Area Command and Bronte Public School Flag Raisers who are participating in the service.
Lest we forget.
Councilor Paula Masselos
Mayor of Waverley
