Clifftop Walkway upgrade works set to commence
18 April 2023 | News
18 April 2023
Waverley Council is upgrading sections of the boardwalk along the Clifftop Walkway at Dover Heights and Vaucluse to make it safer and more enjoyable for all users.
The Diamond Bay Boardwalk will be upgraded first as it is a critical part of the coastal walk and has high visitation rates.
Works will start next month and are expected to take seven months to complete, weather permitting. Construction along Eastern Reserve, Vaucluse will start in the next financial year.
The project is being co-funded through the NSW Government’s Public Spaces Legacy Program and Waverley Council.
The upgrade includes:
- improved viewing decks, stairs, balustrades and handrails to improve accessibility and lifespan of the new structure
- incorporation of lookout spaces with viewing platforms, seating, and signage at key locations as rest points and to capture the spectacular coastal views
- main entry upgrades at Lancaster Road, Bulga Road, Oceanview Avenue and Kimberley Street to include directional signage, seating, bins and a bubbler at key pedestrian entry points to support visitors use and enjoyment of the walkway
- new coastal fencing and road barriers at the Kimberley St entrance to improve safety
- new coastal fencing and stormwater upgrades at George St to divert stormwater and protect the sensitive clifftop environment below
- new staircases in Eastern Reserve to improve accessibility and safety
- protecting and expanding existing low-level native vegetation along the walking route to strengthen the biodiversity corridor along the coastal edge
Mayor of Waverley, Paula Masselos, said the Clifftop Walkway is one of Waverley’s most stunning locations, offering unparalleled ocean views.
“This upgrade will help improve safety for the millions of visitors and residents who use the space whilst ensuring the new structures and materials can better withstand the harsh coastal conditions.”
