York and Darley roads intersection works commence

Inspections recently carried out by Transport for NSW noted that additional upgrades are required to the existing traffic infrastructure.

Construction was temporarily paused to allow for the necessary investigations and approvals and will now resume in the coming weeks.

Due to the additional upgrades, there will be approximately one weeks’ extra night works from Sunday-Thursday, 9pm-5am with some overlapping day works during this period. We will minimise disturbance where possible.

After these night works, there will be a further two weeks of day works between 7am-5pm, Monday - Friday, and 8am-1pm Saturdays, if required, to complete the upgrade.

Waverley Council has received funding through the Federal and State Governments' Road Safety Program to upgrade the intersection of York Road and Darley Road, Centennial Park to make it safer for pedestrians and bike riders. The project includes:

  • Replacing 19 light poles along York Road between Darley Rd and Queens Park Rd with new multifunction poles, and undergrounding existing overhead street lighting [the electrical works
  • removing the existing slip lane from Darley Road into York Road
  • realigning the kerb and widening the footpath area at the entrance to Centennial Park to create more space for pedestrians and bike riders
  • minor landscaping works, and other civil works at the north-east and west intersection corners

Electrical lighting works began on Monday 11 April and will be followed by upgrade works to the intersection. Works will be staged to minimise disruption and is expected to be completed by the end of June, weather permitting. The slip lane is being removed as part of the project but the left turn movement from Darley Rd into York Rd will still be permitted, now controlled by signals.

Member for Coogee Marjorie O’Neill said this demonstrates our commitment to improving safety for pedestrians and bike riders.

“Encouraging people to swap their short drive for a walk or ride, helps take cars off the road, reduces congestion and is great for your health,” Dr O’Neill said.

“Making it easier and safer to walk or ride to Centennial Park will be a great outcome for everyone.”

Mayor of Waverley, Paula Masselos, said the project is part of Council’s People, Movement, Places Strategy to prioritise pedestrian safety across the Waverley area.

“Waverley Council is making it easier for people to move around more safely in our densely populated local government area through this and other upgrade projects, and encourages increased uptake of sustainable transport such as walking and bike riding,” Mayor Masselos said.

Randwick Council and Centennial Parklands were consulted on this project and the design was informed by community feedback. Neighbouring residents in both LGAs have been notified of the upcoming works.
