2024 judges announced for the $40,000 Mark & Evette Moran Nib Literary Award
16 July 2024 | Council News
Waverley Council has announced this year’s panel of judges, each bring a wealth of experience to the task of choosing the winner of the $40,000 Literary Award: Jamie Grant, Julia Carlomagno and Angela Meyer.
This year will be the last for Sydney poet Jamie Grant, who has served as a judge since the Nib Award’s inception in 2002, contributing to its foundation, evolution and success for over 22 years.
Following a national search for a new judge, Melbourne based writer, lecturer and publishing professional Angela Meyer joins the panel.
Waverley Mayor Paula Masselos said the Council is delighted to have assembled such a dynamic and professional judging panel.
“The insight of our independent judges ensures we continue to recognise and support the best Australian research-based literature, and we’re excited the Award is going from strength to strength,” she said.
Thrilled to be on board, Angela Meyer said, “It's a huge privilege to be able to read, discuss, and reward hard-working authors / researchers in this way.”
Grant and Meyer are joined by Melbourne based publisher and award-winning editor Julia Carlomagno. Julia joined the panel in 2023, and has worked with some of the country’s best writers at publishing houses including Monash University Publishing, Penguin, Macmillan, Scribe and Black Inc.
Nib Award judges identify a longlist, 6 shortlist prize winners, and the $40,000 Mark & Evette Moran Nib Literary Award winner. The winner for the Nib People’s Choice Prize ($4,000) will be identified by popular vote with polling to open in September. The longlist will be announced 8 August.
Celebrating excellence in Australian research and writing, the Mark & Evette Moran Nib Literary Award is presented by Waverley Council with support from principal sponsors Mark and Evette Moran and community partner Gertrude & Alice Bookstore Cafe.
The EOI is now annual, with judges appointed for a three-year term. The next round will open in November this year. Interested parties can contact nibaward@waverley.nsw.gov.au for more.
