- Free to be creative! Embrace your inner artist this Mardi Gras season
Free to be creative! Embrace your inner artist this Mardi Gras season
This year’s Mardi Gras theme, free to be, invites our community to celebrate and embrace our freedom to love, play, laugh, and just be. At Waverley Library, we’re fostering queer creativity with a lineup of family activities. So, come and get your pride on!
When: 20 February
Where: Waverley Library
Time: 6.30 - 8 pm
You don’t have to be Picasso to enjoy this one, you just have to be comfortable drawing (sometimes) clothed models! Feel free to appreciate the human body in all its glory in this warm and safe environment.
The class will feature diverse and queer positive models, and we welcome all hes/shes/theys/thems, plus their allies, so get creative and connect with the community.
This is an adults-only event, so please keep the kiddies at home! More info here.
When: 21 February
Where: Waverley Library
Time: 6.30 - 8.30 pm
We’re celebrating LGBTQIA+ stories of love, loss, joy, and history with special film screenings on the third Friday of every month. Bring your chosen family and enjoy snacks and drinks on us.
February’s film, featuring Margaret Qualey as the story’s free-spirited lead, is a tale of two friends who embark on an impromptu road trip in search of a fresh start and an escape from a fresh breakup. Things are going great until they cross paths with a group of inept criminals on their way. This is a feel-good comedy not to be missed. Book your spot here.
When: 22 February
Where: Waverley Library
Time: 10.30 - 11.30 am
Still need an outfit for this year’s parade? Why not don accessories that you created yourself? We’re channeling our inner Elton John in this class to create fabulous, show-stopping classes and crowns fit for a qween!
This activity is a great one for the whole family and is open to ages 5+. Carers/parents will need to be with kids for the whole class
Tickets are essential (and almost sold out), so please book here.
Coming together to commemorate those who came before us
Marks Park Sunrise Memorial

When: 22 February
Where: Marks Park
Time: 6 - 7 am
Join us for a sunrise memorial service as we commemorate those we have lost within the LGBTQIA+ community. This service is an opportunity to not only reflect on the past and pay our respects to those who have come before us and faced animosity but also to look to the future as we overcome these hurdles. It is a chance to appreciate the leaps and bounds this community has made with support from one another and remember what we are striving for.
Give us a wave as we march in the parade!
When: 1 March
Where: Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras parade, Oxford Street
Time: 7 - 11 pm
Keep an eye out as we strut our stuff down Oxford Street at the official Mardi Gras parade on 1 March. It’s our second year joining in on the parade, and we couldn’t be more excited to celebrate this wonderful community, and support queer folks in being free to be themselves.
