Entries for Mark & Evette Moran Nib Literary Award now open

Waverley Council is proud to announce that nominations for the $40,000 Mark & Evette Moran Nib Literary Award are now open. It is Waverley Council’s annual celebration of the best Australian research-based literature and remains the only award of its calibre in Australia to be presented nationally by a local government.

Prize categories include the Mark & Evette Moran Nib Literary Award ($40,000), the Nib People’s Choice Prize ($4,000) and the Alex Buzo Shortlist Prize (6 x $1,500). Entries are judged on literary merit, quality research, readability and value to the community.

Previous winners include Tim Low, Helen Garner, Clare Wright, Delia Falconer and Gideon Haigh. Acclaimed Aboriginal writer of Goorie and European heritage Melissa Lucashenko won the $40,000 prize last year for her book Edenglassie (UQP).

The Mark & Evette Moran Nib Literary Award is administered and presented annually by Waverley Council with the generous support of Principal Sponsors Mark and Evette Moran and the ongoing commitment of our community partner Gertrude and Alice Café Bookshop.

Authors and their publishers are encouraged to nominate literary works, first published between 1 July 2024 and 30 June 2025. The Nib Award is open to all genres.

Nominations close Monday 16 June 2025. Entry guidelines and nomination details are available at waverley.nsw.gov.au/nib.
