Council seeking public assistance for flood study
20 November 2017 | Media Release
MEDIA RELEASE
Waverley Council is calling on residents and business owners to share their experience and ideas to improve flood management in the Local Government Area.
Council has taken the initiative to carry out a flood study to assist with managing the risk faced by flooding.
BMT WBM engineering consultants have been commissioned by Council to undertake this study.
The information collated will guide the direction of future floodplain management actions in Waverley and assist in the development of a comprehensive Floodplain Risk Management Plan.
Mayor of Waverley, John Wakefield said the study is in its inception stage with consultants collecting and collating data on flooding within the catchment.
“Council and BMT WBM are eager to receive any comments and information from the community.
“This data will be essential for the development of detailed rainfall/runoff (hydrology) and flood (hydraulic) models. The models will provide the technical analysis required for the flood study, future development of the Floodplain Risk Management Plan and associated infrastructure upgrade programs.
“The participation of the community is essential to the success of the study, particularly when it comes to flood information,” he said.
Council is requesting residents provide photographs, stories or flood marks on or near their property. In addition, a flood questionnaire will be posted to them and we urge everyone to complete it.
For more information about the study visit haveyoursaywaverley.com.au. Feedback will be accepted until 22 December 2017. The study is expected to be completed by late 2018.
This project is partially funded by The Office of Environment and Heritage and supported by the NSW Government’s Floodplain Management Program.
