WAVERLEY COUNCIL MAKES PARKING FAIRER FOR ALL

Waverley Council is adopting a fairer approach to parking with the introduction next month of significant changes to parking fees and permits.

From 1 July, the fee for the first Residential Parking Permit will be removed, saving the average resident $45 each year. Parking meters in the Bondi Junction commercial area will also be switched off at 6pm each day to re-invigorate business in the evenings.

Waverley Mayor John Wakefield said the changes are in response to overwhelming public feedback about a package of proposals put to the Waverley
community earlier this year.

“Never before has the community been consulted on such a large scale about parking in Waverley,” Mayor Wakefield said.

“The community wanted greater flexibility and consistency around parking and this is what we have delivered.”

In August, Council will also introduce 15-minute ‘drop-in’ zones in shopping areas in and around Bondi Junction and Bondi Beach.

“The changes will make a small difference to Council’s income, but will have a big impact on how people run errands and go about their day-to-day lives.”

As part of changes adopted as part of the Waverley Community Parking Proposal:

  • A total of 66 parking meters in the Bondi Junction commercial
area will be switched off at 6pm each day.
  • A total of 19 parking meters in nearby streets where residential parking
schemes apply will remain on to encourage people to park in free areas
  • A total of 25 ‘drop-in’ zones will be introduced in Bondi Junction and Bondi
    Beach
  • Some exemptions can apply to parking areas, and motorists are encouraged
    to always check traffic signage.
