Waverley Cemetery Coastal Walk reopens
Waverley Council is delighted to invite the public to celebrate the official reopening of the Waverley Cemetery Coastal Walk at Bronte on Saturday, 13 October from 10am to 11.45am.
Wild storms in June 2016 forced the closure of the world-famous coastal walk and parts of the cemetery which has been remediated to withstand any future storm events.
The cemetery landslip and coastal walk restoration works cost more than $4.26 million and have restored the structural integrity of the site.
After a detailed design phase, and a 12-month construction program delivered on-time, the walk has now reopened for the community to enjoy again.
Waverley Mayor, John Wakefield, thanked the community for their patience during the major project which has been one of the Council’s most significant to date.
“To say that these works were difficult is an understatement,” Mayor Wakefield said.
“The works involved a sea wall built over igneous dykes and within tidal zones. The site was constantly inundated with sea water and had to be pumped dry to continue sea wall construction.
“It’s a marvel of engineering, and I take my hat off to everyone involved in this complex project.
“Coast walk users should also be commended for their patience during the project and for respecting the cemetery grounds during the coastal walk closure.”
A new feature of the coastal walk is the new lookout near the cemetery gully.
Please join us on Saturday morning for the official reopening, where there will be musical entertainment and free coffee and cake.
