Alcohol restrictions remain unchanged in Waverley
20 November 2019 | Media Release
20 November 2019
Waverley Council has voted to keep alcohol restrictions unchanged within the Alcohol Prohibited Areas (APAs) in Waverley.
All-day APAs remain in place at Bondi, Bronte and Tamarama parks and beaches as well as Biddigal Reserve, Ray O’Keefe Reserve, Boundi Reserve, Hunter Park and Clementson Park and Eora Park in Bondi Junction.
Waverley Mayor, Paula Masselos, said APAs provide Council Rangers and the police with a means of deterring behaviour that may be or become anti-social or unsafe, or which may otherwise impact the amenity of beach/park users or residents.
“We want everyone to have a great day out and observe restrictions which are there for the benefit of the wider community,” Mayor Masselos said.
Council considered the feasibility of introducing a ‘trial’ easing of restrictions in Bronte Park and Bondi Park. Following feedback received from key stakeholders, Council will not be going ahead with a trial.
“We consulted with key stakeholders about whether it was worth having a trial, and there were a number of submissions for and against. We considered all the feedback we received and we decided we won’t be proceeding with a trial,” Mayor Masselos said.
As in previous years, Ranger patrols will also be increased during summer to more effectively enforce the restrictions and better educate visitors.
Rangers and Police also meet periodically to discuss various issues and to review and confirm their cooperative and coordinated approach to ensuring the safety and enjoyment of beach and park users over the summer period.
