New Bondi Junction bike parking a boost for cyclists, local economy and environment

Sydney cyclists will have a new facility to make their journeys in the east easier with the opening of the Syd Einfeld Drive Bike Parking facility this week, with secure storage for up to 51 bikes next to Bondi Junction Train Station and Bus Interchange.

The parking facility, located underneath the Syd Einfeld Drive overpass, is the first such dedicated space of its type in Bondi Junction. It offers a new level of security, only being accessible by cyclists using pre-registered Opal cards (for free). Bike riders can register their Opal cards for use on the Bike Shed page on the Opal website.

Waverley Mayor Paula Masselos said the facility gives cyclists a very safe, convenient parking option for trips in or though the Eastern suburbs.

“Being right in the middle of our transport hub means it’s so much easier for people to use different types of transport in their commute,” she said. “It provides people with more transport options such as cycling from other parts of the Easter Suburbs, to catch the train to the city from Bondi Junction. Hopefully this new facility will encourage more people to consider active transport options such as cycling.

“Cyclist and pedestrian safety are top priorities for Waverley Council as is promoting more sustainable commuter options for people to utilise when commuting around Sydney.

“Council is committed to preserving and growing the Bondi Junction commercial centre to maintain its status as a regional centre and to ensure that Bondi Junction and Oxford Street Mall specifically are seen as a vibrant destination gateway into Waverley – and this is another great way of doing that.”

The $277,000 for the project was funded by Transport for NSW's Active Transport Walking and Cycling Program in 2020/21.
