Boost to Bondi Junction nighttime economy

Waverley Council last night voted to prepare a draft amendment to the Waverley Development Control Plan (DCP) to extend trading hours in the Bondi Junction Oxford Street Mall to 3am.

Mayor of Waverley, Paula Masselos, said the vote was the first step in the process to revitalise Oxford Street Mall and make it a desirable destination for late-night dining.

The draft amendment will consider what provisions currently exist in the Bondi Junction Mall area including existing business mix, approved trading hours, number of current liquor licenses and outdoor dining permits, as well number of complaints relating to late night trading, anti-social behaviour and other relevant information, including venue sound management.

A consultation strategy to seek input from local businesses, residents and visitors will then be proposed, with Council to receive a report and draft amendment to the Waverley DCP 2022 no later than April 2024 for Council to consider whether to proceed to public exhibition.

“If trading hours end up being extended, we have the potential here to make Bondi Junction Mall a destination where people can enjoy a late-night meal with friends or listen to live music at a speakeasy,” Mayor Masselos said.

“Waverley’s nightlife had a lot to offer residents and tourists and should not be restricted to Bondi Beach.

“Extending trading hours gives investors the confidence to open shop and make a go at attracting a loyal customer base who like the option of being close to trains and buses when they go out at night.

“Waverley is a world-famous tourism destination, and our CBD should reflect that. It should not be a ghost town once people leave the office for the day.”

The amendment to trading hours would only apply to premises in the mall and those that back onto the mall (premises fronting Spring Street between Newland Street and Bronte Road).
