Finding loved ones

Locate people buried at Waverley’s cemeteries and use online resources to find distant relatives and research your family history.

Searching records

You can look for a person buried at either Waverley or South Head General Cemeteries by searching the database*. To assist in your search, ensure that you have the full name and either the date of birth or date of death of the person you wish to locate. Where available, the database will provide you with the interment site number and its position within the cemetery.

Researching family history

Looking for a distant relative isn’t always easy. It helps if you have access to a birth, marriage or death certificate. However, even without an official document there are many online resources you can utilise, including:

  • The Ryerson Index – lists almost every death notice ever published in newspapers in Australia.
  • Newspapers.com and Trove – access historical newspapers. You may also be able to locate burial or funeral notices in local papers such as the Sydney Morning Herald or more general information about people in other publications.
  • NSW Births, Deaths and Marriages – provides free access to records dating back to 1788 as well as other useful resources.

Visit Waverley Library to find out more about the library’s local history collection and local history experts who can assist with your research endeavours.
